We’re Getting Into the Chateau!
I just got confirmation from Jacques Delisle that we have recieved approval to visit the Chateau on our Sunday bus tour. You may be interested in this article about Jacques from a Metz publication.
I can relate to how his names came about as it is not that different from the very Catholic south coast of Newfoundland whre Marilyn comes from. If there is interest, I will translate this
Fabulous news!
The long wait and all that work has paid off.
This is great news.
Bravo! One is especially delighted, never having been allowed past the foyer in the four years my Dad worked there.
Greetings to all, I was born in Metz in 1956. My father Maurice Prud’homme having served in the WW2 stayed on and worked at the Chateau de Mercy until 1967 the year we left. My father was from Montreal and my mother Phillis Tapp was born in Winnipeg but lived her youth in Halifax and also served in WW2. My father stayed in France because he loved Metz. My father lived off base on Avenue Foch and I did not attend school on the base instead I went through the French public school system , great education but alas all boys school. So here is my dilemma, my parents were Canadians I was born Canadian birth abroad I went to French school picked up a killer French accent sort of picked on in France because I was Canadian nothing compared to the reaction I got landing in Montreal in 67 with the said killer French accent (you know the one) and of coursed immediately felt like a stranger in my homeland, things can mean a lot when you are 11. Without going on and on I wanted to say hello , spending my youth in Metz has defined me and I miss it a lot not too many days go by without a souvenir whether it was the ice cream truck that use to come to a beach that my father and others had built with their army shovel that became very popular (let me know if you remember) or the wonderful Christmas lights in the city or the talent show at the Chateau I think I won something one year I think we all won something every year . I know that regardless of the adjustments I had to make I would not change a thing and I does not surprise me that for some who spent a few years in Metz still treasure the memory. I lost my last witness to my childhood in Metz my sister passed away from cancer a few years ago so maybe this website and the memories are dear to me now
Geoffroy,
You have a great story and I am sure you would have had a great time on this last reunion. Metz is now a great European City, very clean and well organized with a lot of ‘people only streets’ in the Cathedrale area. Make sure you send in your email to our webmaster so you will get updates if there is ever another reunion. I am sure your Father would have known our guide, Jacques Deslisle, who retired to Metz.
